BUTTON

gotta love kate blanchette. pretty good. the inner workings of brad pitts character has some inconsistencies that they sort of glossed over by giving him alzhemiers when he reaches 15 or so.

VALKYRIE

can't go wrong with tom cruise. I sort of knew this story occured, but I never knew it's bigness and they did a good job conveying the intensity of what the experience might've been.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

danny boyle is always innovative. the indian actors in this film are really good. sometimes I feel like danny boyle's movies with little children are a little too gimmicy and they take on more than what is a believeable amount of maturity. sort of a violent film as well.

MILK

they sort of ruined the story's suspense by giving away so much of the ending up front. however I never realized how big of an influence harvey milk was on today's acceptance of alternative sexual orientations.

REVOLUTIONARY ROAD

sam mendes makes you think. sort of sad. typical kate winslet ending. very interesting though if you're a couple probably. I would think it would insult a lot of people who were not open to self-questioning.

FROST/NIXON

fascinating. frost was sort of a paper bag for most of the movie. teaches you the importance of preparation in anything you want success in. nixon again was always his own worst enemy and undoing.

FOUR CHRISTMASES

nice. nowhere near 'family store' or 'this christmas' in endear-ability, but nice little tale of a midwestern family.

fall flix

QUANTUM OF SOLACE

I walked out of this movie. It may not even be worth renting. Boring, non-sensible, unattractive bond girls!?? The movie starts off horribly with a super long action sequence that is not well explained and because of the constant cutting it's almost impossible to see any persons face or get reacquainted with bond/craig. just sort of a typical bad action sequence where they break lots of stuff and go fast but it's all too surreal and not in a good way. it never really connected to anything from the past movie for me, which was I think the best bond movie I have seen.

Vague mentions are made to bond seeking revenge or having conflicting feelings about vespa, but again it's all superficial treatment and doesn't really seem to fit into the larger story... the larger story again is pretty boring and goes back to cliche bond ideas where there is a stereotypical villian with a strange accent who wants to acheive domination by some not-well-explained means.

this movie just digs itself a hole of nothingness right at the start, and rather than try to climb out of it it sort of just sinks deeper and deeper, until the only way to enjoy it is to think about it as a pardoy of bond movies. The packed audience I watched it with agreed... when bond and his love interest parachute out of a plane from a thousand feet, share a parachute but don't fully deploy it until they're about 50-100 feet off the ground... then hit the ground with the force of a 10ft fall... this was so stupid and unbelievable and plainly obvious that the only thing to do was to laugh. obviously the filmmakers were just going through the motions on this one. I recommend you do the same and avoid this movie.

SYNEDOCHE NEW YORK

This movie is strange and weird. The only thing normal about this movie is that it's a Charlie Kaufman film, the longer you watch it the more you begin to see elements of Kaufman. This movie is not for everybody, but definately kaufman is a genius. it's sort of slow and somewhat disgusting at times.... I still don't get a lot of the metaphors in the movie. It's definately of the tradition of great kaufman stories like 'being john malcovich' and 'adaptation', where an artist makes a connection to the outside world through a massively analytical effort (probably more like adaption than malcovich in this sense). If you liked either of these kaufman films this movie is worth seeing (probably on dvd).

woody allen

VICKIE CHRISTINA BARACELONA

hilarious. penelope cruz gets better and better with every performance... she steals the whole friggin movie! see it.

TRANSSIBERIA

more suspenseful of a thriller than I've seen in a while. Here's a couple from this week I enjoyed:

MARRIED LIFE

Pretty unique story, even better performances... Chris Cooper, Pierce Brosnan and Rachel McAdams. can't get much better than that. this is a good discussion movie.

LEATHERHEADS

wow this movie surprised me. George Clooney is seriously seriously funny. You see everything that was good about him in 'O Brother Where art Though?', but in a much better story for him. Plus he directed it... this movie was just hiliarious. I have not laughed this loud in a long time. Of the 3 movies GC has directed, this is the only one I enjoyed and that's an understandment bc it's GOOD.

the bank job

ok, first I have to say...

SAFFRON BURROWS IS @!#$^@ HOT AS @#$!@#$

She has a very sad sad face but you can't look away from it. Skip it.

IN BRUGES
Hilarious. Not a "light" fun film exactly, but tremendously funny and even a little soulful thrown in.

ATONEMENT
Original, but kind of heartless and boring. Somewhat contrived. Very technically sophisticated on all levels... beautifully shot, acted, directed, written etc... the whole concept is kind of lacking passion, but not execution. Don't fall for the trailers about this being some kind of romantic war-torn lovestory.

PERSOPOLIS
Boring. This is what happens when the novelist adapts the screenplay and directs. She doesn't know what to leave out, so she puts everything in. The first half of the movie is tremendously boring rendition of the iranian revolution; I suspect that this movie is probably designed for people who read the book and loved it. It does get cuter in the middle when marie goes through her coming-of-age period, this is what endears people to the movie I expect (and lead to some comparisons to Juno- which it is nothing like). The end is kind of lacking. Maybe wait for dvd here.

UNTRACEABLE
Surprisingly interesting, although questionable on a moral level. Good if you have seen everything else.

JUNO
not sure if I reviewed this already, but my favorite film of last year. see it!

DEFINATELY MAYBE
Probably ryan reynolds best movie ever. Isla Fischer? the main love interest (vince vaughns girlfriend in wedding crashers) was also really good (or else I'm falling in love with her... one of the two is true). Will be hard to find a better christmas movie this year. As roger ebert says this film moves very quickly and has lots going on, but once you accept this it becomes very very fun. Chris Brown is super talented, although I'm probably the last one to hear about him. Sharon Leal is hot-as-f. My only complaint about this movie was it was slightly too long, although the fantastic ending made it not really an issue, this was like a fleeting 1min feeling.

HITMAN
Roger ebert steers the way on this one. Maybe the funniest movie I've seen this year, so honest! Be just as good on dvd

SLEUTH

I'm fond of this movie, but most people would not like it. It's beautifully done, almost too much it feels contrived somewhat. The sets, staging and cinematography are incredible... it's directed like a stage play by Kenneth Branaugh (Hamlet). The main reason to see this movie (itself a remake of a 1960s? movie starring michael caine) is to see Jude Law and Michael Caine work off each other. The range of their performances is incredible... makes me wish the Academy had a "best duet" oscar, they would win it! Do not see this movie if you are looking for fun or an escape, this is for die-hard movie-fans only.

30 DAYS OF NIGHT
I had high expectations of this being that Sam Raimi produced it. It didn't really do much for me, although I thought they did a good job of making the vampires scary. The vampires were almost TOO strong. mostly blahhh..

SAW IV
I liked it... maybe the best of the saw movies? Focuses mainly on Jigsaw's backstory. The SAW team is definately good at keeping these movies fresh and new, even at number four.

fall in the air

EASTERN PROMISES
Viggo Mortenson (sp?) is great. This was like 3 movies in one it kept twisting! see it.

INTO THE WILD
A very sentimental take on a very sad story. Beautifully shot, great outdoor and adventure tale. Amazing story of a smart guy who dropped out of college to live on the fringe of society. Directed by sean penn. Emile hirsch oscar nod? dvd or theater it's good.

ASSISINATION OF JESSE JAMES
this movie blows. there is no action, nothing of interest in this movie. All the facts and information regarding jesse james is narrated, in this sense you might think it's a documentatry about JJ, but it's not really informative. Every scene is mind-numblying uninteresting. I walked out of the theater half-way through.

WHY DID I GET MARRIED
very realistic portrayal of modern-day marriages. funny, great performances... tyler perry's best film? dvd or theater.

MICHAEL CLAYTON
a thinker. some good twists. george cloonely plays himself in a very original film by sydney polluck. Sean penn writes and directs, the story is a little tragic but unpredictable and told very imaginatively. True story. See it. I believe it when people say Emile Hirsch could get an academy nod over his performance in this one.

HEARTBREAK KID
Not an oscar contender. Not really even up to usual benstiller or farrelly brothers standards. See it or not, doesn't really matter. It's got some good laughs, but never really comes together.

IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH
Excellent. Oscar buzz for sure, so many stars... such touching performance by tommy lee jones and all his co-stars. Raises very poignant questions about consequences of our Iraq involvement. Please see it.

THE KINGDOM
Awesome. Never stops, always excites and interests. The message is a little troubling, or at least thought-provoking or perplexing. It delivers. See it when you can.

THE BRAVE ONE
I hated the first 15min of this movie. Then it got interesting. This movie was made for jodie foster. I was very impressed by Terrance Howard. He could get a nomination for this performance. It totally changed the way I look at him as an actor. Again the message of vigilante revenge killings may be troubling for some.

halloween

very good. Danny boyle said he doesn't need to make science fiction movies anymore, because after SUNSHINE he's done everything he can do in the genre. see it.

ILLEGAL TENDER
looked like it could be a very stereotypical movie, but surprisingly original. Good story of a strong woman who takes care of her family in very difficult situation. See it if you've ever wanted an honest answer to the question "what happens I I fall in love with a drug lord?"

DEATH SENTENCE
from director of saw, violent. kevin bacon is great, if you want to understand the consequences of revenge, this is for you. I was very disappointed that kelly preston didn't have more screen time, she is so hot!

NO RESERVATIONS
I liked this movie. My main problem is that it could've been so much more... it could've been "Harry met Sally" good, if they had done a little more work on it. Aaron eckhart rocks the house, it's worth it just to see him break down katherine zeta jone's facade. If you like light romantic comedies, this satisfies. Pay very close attention during the first few minutes of the movie, a lot happens and some important information is not repeated. I could talk about the intracies of this movie all day long, email me if you know what I'm talking about. it could've been so much more... ah well.

SUPERBAD
If you liked knocked up, this will entertain. If you remember high school, you'll laugh. you could see it multiple times and laugh. it delivers.

BOURNE ULTIMATEUM
hated it, left towards end to use the bathroom.... I ended up leaving the theater without even remembering the movie wasn't over. I never liked any of this series, except the action sequences, the rest is bullshit. I kept getting frustrated, come on stop talking and let MD kick some more ass! I don't quite understand why or how this movie has done so well... it does not deliver. and I like matt damon and joan allen.

THE INVASION
didn't really do anything for me, but somehow kind of pulled me in towards the end. most people would probably call this a renter.

WAR
horrible, horrible horrible. If you're thinking... jason statham AND jet li? what kind of crazy unbelievable fight scenes can these two pull off in the same movie? if you're thinking this, I understand because it's exactly what I thought. What you will see is a completely boring, unbelievable story with almost no action whatsoever. I mean literally, the guys jet li injures could all fit in one ambulance. That's how unexciting this movie is.

I NOW PRONOUCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY
good stuff. over the top but funny. I wouldn't see it twice. adam sandler is very himself, however you feel about that.

DEATH AT A FUNERAL
humorous little british comedy. got some good moments, peter dinklage is hilarious. probably more of a renter.

BECOMING JANE
I like anne hathaway and the lead actor (james something). their performances were good enough, that I'm glad they got a paycheck for doing it... but I can't remember anything else. which hopefully speaks for itself.

THE SIMPSONS MOVIE
just like the tv show, it has it's moments. filmmakers astutely point out how they can't believe anyone would be stupid enough to pay money to see a movie about characters they can see every week on TV.

TRANSFORMERS
excellent, very michael bay but I'm a big fan. some people say maybe too much cars, too comercialistic. didn't bother me. theater or dvd, it'll be good. it delivers.

SICKO
michael moore's best film. very very truthful in terms of the people who he talked to. in terms of factualism, look elsewhere but if you want a heartstring pull here you go. Outside of the film, I have to say I saw michael moore debatting CNN's dr. sanjay gupta about the points in his movie... Moore lost all factual/political credibility with me. He couldn't even defend himself, sanjay gupta was actually extremely conceeding and very nice to moore, but moore wouldn't address his questions and kept bringing up Bush and how Bush was to blame for america's healthcare problems. Um, ok.

RATATOULLIE
loved it. best since 'the incredibles'.

EVENING
hated it. How could so many great actresses make a bad movie? See EVENING for an answer to this question.

LIVE FREE DIE HARD
delivers to the maximum. Who would've thought the 4th (or is it 5th) die hard could be good? who would've thought bruce willis at 50yrs old would survive making another one? this is the best action flick all summer, better than spider man... better than transformers, this is it.

RESCUE DAWN
I like pretty much everything christian bale does. I wish this movie was in theaters longer because I would see it again. See this movie if you want an answer to the question "How can being stubborn keep you alive?"

TALK TO ME
Don cheadle, one of the most versatile actors working.

that's about all I can remember at the moment.

acquired tastes

ocean's 13: hated it. your life will not be changed by watching this movie. heck you may not even remember it 5min after leaving the theater. I could almost visualize the script of this movie when pitt and clooney were doing their scenes, no life whatsoever. The only appeal of this movie is seeing pitt/clooney/damon deliver someone else's funny lines at each other... but to be honest I'd rather have watched ocean's 13 previews over and over (or outtakes) for 1.5hr than see this film.

fantastic 4: pretty boring. like most jessica alba movies, fantastic 4 has no heart whatsoever. I've been intruiged with the fantastic four since hearing about the comic book described by tobey maguires character in "the ice storm", a family of super heroes that has all the problems of familys just amplified with super-power-dom. There's no family feel between any of the characters in this series though... the concept of the story is good (and probably straight from comic book) but everything was very superficially adapted, who gives a shit what happens to these people? If you really liked the comic book (or jessica alba in blue spandex with matching contact lenses) then you might feel differently.

day watch: I never saw "night watch", the prequel to this film. I admit I got lost in the movie a number of times, and two people in the theater fell asleep watching this film. Even without the subtitles it's a little complicated, I can't say whether seeing the first film would have made it easier. That said, Day Watch is really a great example of testing the boundaries of storytelling... the whole concept of living and dead worlds existing in parallel with each other, and the relevant mechanisms and rules for allowing this coexistence has been painstakingly constructed by the filmmakers. It's a fascinating idea and it's very visually exciting... I was reminded simulatenously of 'run lola run', 'brazil' and 'kung fu hustle'. This movie is probably gonna be more appealing to a film school student than anyone else.

hostel part II: I saw the first hostel and I was scared shitless and incredibly disturbed. These movies make me glad I canceled my tour of eastern europe two years ago. The only movie I've seen that is perhaps more disturbing than Hostel partI is "Wolf Creek", which rober ebert said made him wonder what was the purpose of watching a movie where people were tortured endlessly with no redemption or morality? With all this said, hostelII actually was less violent and pure-gore than it's predecessor, which I liked... I won't give away the ending but I came away feeling hopeful after watching it, which was not what I expected.

Mr brooks is still the best out there, I've seen it two or three times now. I hope they make a sequel this movie rocks the house.

june 1st weekend

Mr. Brooks and Knocked up.

Great weekend for new movies.

Mr brooks is great great movie, fascinating character study. Kevin Costner plays unusual role as a god-fearing entrepreur who good father and community member but is secretly addicted to murder. I've already seen this movie twice it's just so interesting the character and story are so well conceived there is just so much to take in... plus the soundtrack is cold creepy and fascinating. I'll probably see it again.

Knocked up is hilarious... little graphic and some off color humor but way funnier than 40-year old virgin.

bug

this movie is a trip. One subversive paranoid takes over ashley judds mind and her oklahoma hotel room.

it's so distinctive it's either incredibly bad or completely perfect. it's the kind of crazy movie that runs in the background of a house party at 2am when the only people left are the really serious drinkers... the only way to enjoy this movie is to laugh how ridiculous it is. very cult.

everyone else will just find it uncomfortable, stupid or just too unbelievable to bother with. ashley judd (kiss the girls) and michael shannon (world trade center, lucky you) give great performances, really intense and over-the-top.

this movie is what it is.

mid-week update

saw lives of others wednesday... this was nominated for best foreign language film at the oscars alongside of pan's labyrinth and won a number of other awards. it's about an east germany secret police officer just prior to the collapse of the berlin wall in mid-eighties. It was an interesting character study but I didn't feel particularly empassioned or struck by any of the events, story or characters. kind of a 1984 big-brother film with heart, if you can imagine that... if you can't... well you're not missing much.

Lucky You with drew barrymore and the incredible hulk. It was simple, but good. Better than I expected... the storyline was very true to the characters and I was interested the whole way through. Very light movie... not exactly funny but very entertaining and I thought about it after I left the movie theater. Probably a good rental if you're into that sort of thing.

whats out there

REALLY liked this movie "waitress" that came out last weekend. it
stars keri russel from felicity... it's a very charming small film but
it's gotten really great reviews, very fun you'd like it.SpiderMan3
rocks the house. I've only seen it once but it exceeds it's very
lofty expectations. I was pleasantly surprised and entraced by "The
invisible"... it's a very hollywood movie but it's a remake of a
swedish film and book. I would maybe see this again before I saw
spiderman3 again, just because it's so fascinating to watch I didn't
have to think at all during the whole thing it was a unique
experience.

Other solid picks include Disturbia and Fracture. Not uber realistic
but suspenseful and entertaining, great performances. Next was
interesting but it's hard to make a movie where the main character
knows everything that's gonna happen before it happens, destroys all
the suspense.

BlackBook is a very engrossing story about a jewish woman in the dutch
resistance during world war II when netherlands was under german
control. It's a story I never heard before, it was very good but it
affected me on kind of a deep level and I was kind of paranoid after
coming out of it. Gotta be in the right frame of mind to see this
one. "Away from her", first film written and directed by actress Sara
Polly (Go, the sweet hereafter) is very interesting portrait of an
older couple where wife gets alsthehimers and how it affects their
relationship. Interesting, but since I am at a point in my life where
I feel lost sometimes right now it was kind of intense to watch a
woman who is losing touch with reality.
